Understanding Li Bingbing's Departure from Meg 2

The Meg, released in 2018, was a terrific popcorn movie which, while not on the caliber of other monster shark flicks, is surprisingly enjoyable owing to action icon Jason Statham and the ever-gorgeous Li Bingbing.

However, when Meg 2: The Trench, the sequel to the first film, was nearing its release and a trailer was out, everyone was dissatisfied because Suyin, played by the actress Li Bingbing, was absent.

So, what happened to Mei Ying’s mom in Meg 2? In the film, it was revealed that Suyin had died in the years between the sequel and the first film, but a particular explanation was never disclosed.

Though various characters are missing in Meg 2, the biggest absence is Li Bingbing’s Suyin. She was alive at the conclusion of the last movie and positioned to be a romantic interest for Jason Statham moving forward.

Suyin’s daughter Meiying returns for the sequel, which also introduces Chinese cinema star Jing Wu as Suyin’s brother Juiming.

Instead of letting questions circulate about why Suyin is not in the movie, Meg 2 openly explains why Li Bingbing’s character is not featured.

What Happened to Suyin in Meg 2

In the much-anticipated sequel Meg 2: The Trench, viewers were met with an unexpected discovery regarding the fate of Suyin Zhang, portrayed by Li Bingbing.

In the years between the first and second installments, it was discovered that Suyin had passed away. However, the specifics surrounding her death remain shrouded in mystery, with the movie revealing no explicit information regarding how she met her sad end.

Meg 2 merely hints at the mystery of her death with a quick scene where Jonas Taylor and Meiying ponder her absence. However, there may still be possibilities for her character to reappear in future editions.

If Meg 3 is green-lit, there could be an opportunity for Li Bingbing to resume her role as Suyin, possibly through flashback sequences to give insight into the circumstances of her death.

Many allegations have spread regarding her other ventures, her commitment to becoming a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for China, and her enthusiasm for charitable work have kept her schedule tight, causing her to leave the company.

Unfortunately, nothing has officially been confirmed at this moment, so we can only conjecture as to why Li Bingbing didn’t resume her part.

However, we do know that she was slated to star in the movie up until February 2022 but then departed the production for “undisclosed reasons.”

However, following the movie’s premiere, several ideas about what could have motivated her to decide not to proceed with the sequel have emerged.

One theory suggested by Screen Rant is that the Chinese superstar may have decided to step away from the film industry due to personal reasons, as the month following her exit from The Meg 2.

It was announced in an article by Vogue China that Li Bingbing and her long term boyfriend of several years, Hsu Wen Nan had split, so she may have been dealing with too much on her plate at the time to focus on acting.

Alternatively, with her long career in the cinema industry and having acted in several legendary franchises such as Resident Evil and Transformers, there might also be a simple option that Li Bingbing chose to retire from the profession, as she hasn’t starred in anything since Ordinary Hero (2022).

As we await formal pronouncements or future developments, one thing is certain: Li Bingbing’s contributions to cinema will always be recognised, whether she decides to return to the big screen or not!
